Work Hard, Not Smart

The mantra of new entrepreneurs, “Work smart, not hard,” has been repeated without care. Sometimes you have to wonder if those utterances have a valid point. It implies that those who work hard don’t work smart. It is highly unlikely that hard work comes without intelligently doing so.

What does it really mean to work smart? Does it mean to work less in order to yield the same results? It is easy to look at such a phrase with scepticism. Efficient work comes from proper assessments and implementation of appropriate actions. Use your problem-solving skills to find simpler solutions.


Hard work is no longer reserved for strenuous physical labour. Mental activity can exhaust workers. With that said, working smart can prove to be difficult. Project and management skills aren’t easy to acquire. Lateral thinking is a skill that is learnt by practice.

Smart working has been characterized by less time spent on projects. The idea is to find “hacks” to work around as many procedures as you can. What started as a way to breed innovation has developed into a way to promote shortcutting and ineffectiveness. Temporary fixes don’t solve anything.

Working “smart” doesn’t mean working less. It doesn’t mean less effort. It is about strategically allotting your resources to activities to give you the maximum benefit. The notion that business is easy when a few “hacks” are used is silly. There is no shortcut for long-term success.
